2011 Hyundai Elantra Makes WARD'S 10 Best Interiors List

The all-new 2011 Hyundai Elantra (Avante) with its modern design and numerous luxury features, was named to Ward’s 10 Best Interiors list. This honour further demonstrates that a car achieving 40 mpg standard highway fuel economy is not only practicable but fashionable as well. In one of the most competitive years for the award, Ward’s editors evaluated 51 vehicles that were all-new or featured significantly upgraded interiors. This year’s 10 Best Interiors list represents a broad cross section of the industry, from utility vehicles and minivans to small cars and high-end premium sedans.

“Proving economy cars ‘ain’t what they used to be,’ the Hyundai Elantra Limited delivers enough flair to suggest the South Korean automaker is finding its own unique interior design language,” said Drew Winter, editor-in-chief, Ward’s AutoWorld. “The instrument panel of the Elantra displays a curvaceous sensuality, with a belt drawn tightly around the climate controls; the center console then widens as it flows down to the gear shifter.”

The 2011 Elantra represents a modern approach to the traditional compact sedan segment featuring a sleek style, advanced safety features, “class above” interior volume and standard 40 mpg highway fuel economy. Inside the Elantra, customers find Hyundai’s expertise in interior packaging, lighting, leading-edge design and craftsmanship. This approach is visible in the clarity of the instruments and the tilt and telescopic steering wheel. The seats help fuel economy and the environment, being made of lightweight, environmentally friendly foam. Heated seats are available in the front and the rear, a segment first.

“The sophisticated interior of the Elantra is designed to bring new life to the compact car segment combined with the ultimate in functionality for the driver,” said Chris Zarlenga, design manger, Hyundai America Technical Center. “Being named to Ward’s 10 Best Interiors, alongside vehicles like the Audi A8 and BMW X3 xDrive35i, shows that compact cars can provide an engaging experience as well.”

Ward’s editors picked the winning interiors using the same methodology employed for the annual Ward’s 10 Best Engines program. Scoresheets are completed for each vehicle driven based on materials, ergonomics, safety, the human-machine interface, comfort, fit-and-finish, overall value and aesthetics. Following the evaluation, Ward’s editors have extensive discussions to determine the winners.

The Ward’s 10 Best Interiors competition takes the place of the Interior of the Year program that dates back well before 2005, when Ward’s acquired the Auto Interiors Conference. The 2011 interior winners will be honored in a special ceremony at this year’s conference May 17 at The Henry Ford hotel in Dearborn, Mich.

All-New 2011 Hyundai Elantra/Avante

A pictures tells a thousand stories, so they say. Judge for yourself how handsome Hyundai's latest "fluidic design" is and you'd be awed by how far this Korean automaker has come of age.

To be sold by Q2 in South Korea and perhaps up to six months later in other markets, the all-new Avante/Elantra will be sporting a 6-speed auto transmission mediating power to the front wheels - from a 1.6-litre (Gamma) GDI engine capable of 140 hp and 166 Nm - while claiming to be 10 percent more fuel efficient than its immediate predecessor.

Driven: Hyundai Elantra X20 CVVT

Click on all images to enlarge

Korean automotive brands have alway played the value-card for their competitive existence. The new Elanta 2.0 CVVT - from Kah Bintang - is no exception. Targeted at the Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Lancer GT and Toyota Corolla Altis' C-segment, this CKD Hyundai at RM93,888 is just a few grand more than a B-segment Toyota Vios 1.5S or the Suzuki SX4 Sedan. Contrastingly, under its bonnet beats a 2.0L 4-pot with VVT (not a 1.5L or 1.6L lump) and is claimed to be much frugal than what Korean cars are (or were) notorious for.

The following post would be in a pictorial synopsis presentation, for most of you would have been familiar with the Elantra by now. Here's hoping you'd find this test review still relevant and helpful should you decide to shop for one!

Some said the sideline apts a lumbering dolphin somewhat. I'd say it isn't bad looking if you have been observant of the Elantra/Accent's design language lineage. It's somewhat refreshing in the sea of taller and angular Japanese sedans.

Vestigial remnant of Oriental Assemblers/Kah Motors' "Honda era" radio antenna at the left boot shoulder mounting point. Albeit now replaced by a non-extending-and-non-retractable, fixed length and non-chromed type for the new millenium.

Proof that the E90 3-series can do better at the butt section. Bravo Hyundai!

Further proof that you don't have to be German to make rear lamps with clean-cut lines, neat shape and contours. 'X' prefix not for denoting AWD. Thank goodness no more "200i" or "RX-S" badges of yesteryears!

Errr...kind of reminds you of 'M' alloys...no?

Simple dash is functional and relatively well made. Dash top of soft-touch material. Two-tone trim brightens up interior and creates airier ambience. Beige-coloured seats only leather in the centre section, the rest are of less-supple PVC, including the stitched door trim.

Rear seat pocket and base plate suspiciously Conti in design and execution. VAG-esque perhaps?

Boot capacious enough for most families.

Gated gearshift reminds one of some previous Nissan/Infiniti models. Ditto for A/C switches. Both looked good actually. Korean automakers' proven formula at work here!

Integrated CD-Radio switches tactile and firm to operate. Way better than Mitsubishi Lancer's.

Likewise, on-steering controls firm and tactile as well. Much like Suzuki SX4's.

Engine block large-ish for a 2.0L 4-pot. Lump appears suspiciously an old school Mitsu-design, cam cover with CVVT is likely new though - probably an add-on in course of engineering updates. Engine not to be mistaken with 4B11 from Mitsubishi Lancer GT or even the Hyundai Sonata 2.0.

Typical Kia-Hyundai wing mirror nicked from some common parts bin.

Nice interface of 3 different surfaces of the door, dash and glove box. Pity that the sloping part of door trim (incorporating power window switch) isn't soft in continuation from dsah top.

The Elantra takes corner predictably but not meant to be sporty. Ride comfort level good for its class. Picks up speed quite effortlessly. However, torque and powerband feels more like a Japanese 1.8L sedan.

NVH refinements surprisingly good for its class. Cruising stability likewise.

In conclusion, it will take more pursuasion to get more regular Joes (and Janes?) to park this in their garages, basement or car porch. It's a decent family sedan nevertheless but the ever-bugging resale value question mark hovers over most of those in the market for a Toyota, Honda or Nissan. On the flipside, it is worth remembering this though, the initial outlay to hire-purchase (downpayment, monthly repayment et al) an Elantra is hardly near a Civic, Altis, Lancer or even the new Slyphy. Now, that's some food for thought.

Test Review: Hyundai Elantra X20 CVVT

The Hyundai Elantra X20 CVVT has just been tested recently as part of the ongoing NST-Maybank CBT COTY 2008 judging. It's quite a good drive than most of us would expect it to be. At RM93,888 it's almost the price of a decent-specced Japanese (Thai-sourced) B-segment 1.5L sedan. Read all about it here soon ;)

Hyundai Elantra voted 'Best Family Sedan' by Asian Auto - VCA

The new Hyundai Elantra X20 CVVT, distributed and marketed by subsidiaries of Oriental Holdings Berhad under Oriental-Hyundai Sdn Bhd and Kah Bintang Auto Sdn Bhd respectively, received the coveted “Asian Auto – VCA 2008 Best Family Sedan” Award for local assembly cars.

Asian Auto with VCA’s expertise, shortlisted the winners and held the Presentation Award Luncheon at the Saujana Golf & Country Club recently. Asian Auto is a monthly Malaysian and Singaporean motoring publication.

This latest 2008 Best Family Sedan Award adds to a host of international acclaims and awards the Hyundai Elantra has garnered in its segment, such as the 2007 AutoPacific’s Most Ideal Car Award, 2007 NHTSA’s Highest Government Crash Test Rating, 2008 Consumer Report’s Top Picks and Best Bet in Jack Gillis’ The Car Book 2008.

Incidentally, the Elantra is also Hyundai’s No. 1 Best Selling car in USA with sales exceeding 1.2 million and is also Hyundai’s best selling car in China. By utilizing Motor Driven Power Steering and an advanced transmission with Variable Force Solenoid found only in top of the range cars, the Elantra’s fuel efficiency is improved by almost 2.8% making it a leader in fuel economy in its segment. Based on data from independent testing by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Elantra could travel the entire distance from JB to Butterworth of 746km on just a full tank of 53L.

To address pressing higher petrol costs, the Elantra is also being offered with an option of NGV kit. This sedan is also available with a Sport Bodykit version that is specially designed for performance by INCUS of Korea as well as an option for an Incus integrated stainless steel, twin exhaust system.

New Hyundai Elantra X20 for RM93,888

Kah Bintang, one of the two Hyundai passenger cars distributors in Malaysia, is offering the new 2008 Hyundai Elantra X20 CVVT for RM93,888 (on-the-road with insurance). Seeing a couple of these new Hyundais on the road over Chinese New Year recently, it makes me wonder what the ‘X’ prefix was all about. The slanty badge looked pretty much after-market, even more so an after-thought! On the flipside, the rear end design and execution appeared to me as being refined, sleek and modern. In fact, it was somewhat akin to the few Singapore registered Nissan Bluebird Slyphy spotted, I reckoned.

The 2008 Elantra is only available in 4-speed A/T guise, driven by a 2.0L DOHC CVVT motor, capable of 143ps at 6,000rpm and 186Nm of torque at 4,600rpm. For safety, it comes fitted with dual SRS airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with EBD and front seatbelt pre-tensioners with force limiter. It is also claimed to have scored a 5-star crash test rating for the US NHTSA front impact test. Steering is now an electric-powered item, which is said to improve fuel economy (a claimed 746km every tankful of petrol!) and is tilt as well telescopically adjustable. Conventional McPherson struts spring up the front, while the rear axle features multi link suspension. Disc brakes are standard issue all around, peering out of 16” alloys. Electronic climate control is also standard along with leather-upholstered seats, for a higher level of in-cabin comfort and convenience.
