One of the first modern EVs was the General Motors Impact. GM changed its name and started leasing the GM "EV1" in 1996. This sleek looking car even set a World Record of more than 180 miles per hour! General Motors engineers and their outside consultants designed the EV1 from the ground up. The automobile combined lightweight materials, aerodynamic design, a system that recharges the batteries during braking, and sophisticated computer-controlled propulsion to create an electric vehicle.
